Nationwide improvements for Nando’s Guest Wi-Fi

Extensive upgrades at several hundred sites for a major UK restaurant chain.

Nando's guest Wi-Fi

It’s a firm validation when you’re:

1. Engaged by a client initially as a consultant on an upcoming project.

And then –

2. Based on your recommendations, asked to deliver the work as well.

During Summer 2014, Nando’s Restaurants UK tasked Jade with recommendations for required upgrades to their existing network.

At hundreds of locations throughout the UK, improvements were needed, on a multi-phase basis.

Following the guidance provided, Jade were retained in a role that progressed from initial consultancy to implementation nationwide.

Jade Solutions managing director, Mark Brackley explained the transition, commenting:

‘We were asked about the best way to configure a network for Nando’s guest Wi-Fi, in terms of cabling, switches and wireless access points.

‘Our recommendations were proof enough of our expertise and capabilities, which then led to us being asked to undertake the upgrades throughout the UK.’

Faster speeds, easier management, better value

Work on phase one involved installation of LAN switches, wireless access points and the associated CAT cabling in 158 restaurants.

These already had suitable POS terminals for the LAN design when the project commenced in August 2016.

The installation delivered on key principles from the initial consultation to give Nando’s a UK-wide view of all restaurant infrastructure.

An innovative cloud networking offering streamlined the rollout and gave a clear picture of centralised infrastructure and management capabilities.

This enhanced visibility and control across wired and wireless access significantly cut ongoing network administration complexity.

The unique distributed control architecture enabled increased scale, speed and resilience for Nando’s guest Wi-Fi.

And critically, the right underlying connectivity platform was selected and delivered to enable ongoing innovations.

Jade and their partners’ combined expertise ensured that advanced APIs could feed network data to business applications for future developments.

Pace, precision, efficiency

After mid October, the second phase of work could commence, incorporating further installation work and upgrades to POS terminals/tills.

Locations with newer tills that could be integrated with the newly installed network incapabilities were visited first.

Premises with older tills were then addressed, with the incumbent terminals replaced with ‘network ready’ ones.

Technical services manager Damien Livingstone explained the efficiency of the operation which enabled such a fast completion of phase two, commenting:

‘At peak operation, there were six teams of two specialist technicians, working night shifts from Sunday to Thursday.

‘This enabled us to complete a full roll-out at 227 sites in just three months, including several locations in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.’

The pace of this roll-out was more impressive considering that upgrades to EPoS systems were absorbed without any change to scope of work or extra charges.

From concept to completion

Jade provided all the required technical support throughout all of the POS installations to ensure speedy and smooth implementation.

A third phase of work was also undertaken by Jade, upgrading a number of data cabinets to securely house routers to enable a future WAM project.

Tony Sharp, technical services manager at Nando’s highlighted the satisfaction with the work carried out during each phase of the project by Jade, commenting:

‘We were impressed with Jade’s ability to make their ideas reality – it was clear their recommendations for this work were sound but to apply them required specialist expertise.

‘A project with this many variables and tight deadlines only succeeds with the right combination of experience, collaboration and flexibility – Jade delivered all of these.’
